The issue with assisted sui*ide is that no one really knows 100% cerrainty what happens next, and death is final. Folks with the desire to die should be evaluated for depression and treated appropriately, not encouraged to ignore mental illness. Treating mental illness is the medical standard. Look, as someone with intractable pain, the idea of death has always been appealing to me, and it would be unhelpful to me if a physician tempted me with it. Everyone still has a lot of good they can do in the world--even people who are disabled, weak, or, like me, in constant pain. To encourage us to die is not only to devalue our lives as functionally less valuable than yours, but to devalue the lives of the poor, needy, and starving or sad that we can still help with the breath we have left.
